Seattle Times op-ed: We’re suing over WA’s new income tax. Here’s why.
In a recent Seattle Times op-ed, Chelan County entrepreneurs Lauren and Ben Petter are partnering with the Citizen Action Defense Fund, former state Attorney General Rob McKenna and former Washington Supreme Court Justice Phil Talmadge to challenge Washington’s recently passed income tax. They are the lead plaintiffs in the case:
Through our businesses, we have a unique view into how people are investing in Washington, both commercially and personally. We see when projects move forward, and we see when they don’t. Recently, we’ve seen projects paused or canceled as investment decisions shift. It’s happening in real time.
We’re also seeing something else: people leaving. Friends, business owners, and families making the decision that it’s simply easier to build and grow somewhere else. When that happens, it doesn’t just affect a small group. It impacts jobs, local investment, and the long-term health of the communities we all depend on.
Washington has historically had a competitive advantage. The absence of an income tax, combined with a strong economy and incredible quality of life, made it one of the best places in the country to start and grow a business. That environment is changing.
